Cross the road and follow the path alongside the river Derwent over meadows and through woods until it reaches the B6001 about 500m south of Hathersage. Turn left, over the river, past The Plough and take the second road on the right which goes steeply uphill past Hazelford Hall. As the road swings sharp left, continue along a track past Tor Farm and down to Highlow Brook in Bretton Clough. Continue along the hillside above the brook until the track drops down to Stoke Ford at SK211795. Take the left hand track, and where it soon forks take the left again. The track zigzags up the hill, and over the 2nd gate where the track splits 3 ways take the central option over Eyam moor. The path climbs past a small outcrop then levels before arriving at Sir William Hill road. Cross this to the style almost opposite and follow the track past the derelict Ladywash lead mine to a minor road. Turn left then shortly right through a small gate, cross the fields past a small wood to where the path drops off to the right. Descend the hill (can be slippery) to a paved track and another minor road. Cross the road, pass through a gate and descend either left or straight on into Eyam village. In the village square take the signed footpath past the Lydgate graves and boundary stone which leads steeply down to Stoney Middleton. Pass through the village, cross the busy A623, go through the Moon Inn car park to a gate on the left, cross a small lane and follow the track parallel to the main road until forced onto it. Follow the road for 200m, turn left at a one way section, left again along the main road past the playing fields. At the next road junction take the B6054 signed Sheffield and after 250m take a small track on the left that leads to the river Derwent. Follow the track upstream, cross the bridge at Froggat village and follow the ancient track which runs parallel with the river where the little road turns up and right. The track leads across meadows and pleasant woodlands back to Grindleford. Allow 4 hours walking time. Points of interest. Eyam village, Stoney Middleton church, ancient tracks |
